The Culture of Cinema
Socio-cultural history through ten of the greatest motion pictures; two Award winners representing each decade.
Appropriate Reading level: Grade 4+ ESL Intermediate +
Expected Outcomes:
- Students will use the Talking Circle tradition to effectively communicate their ideas on a variety of topics with their fellow students. (See p. 27 Those Who Were Here Before)
- Students will keep journals to record their (a) responses to reading selections (b) answers to practice exercises (c) list of new words + synonyms and antonyms
- Students will read about the origin of cinema and create questions that their classmates can answer based on the 5 question words: Who? What? When? Where? Why?
- Students will identify plot, character, setting and theme as elements of dramatic arts for each film seen and determine which element is stressed in each film.
- Students will write synopsis of plots (paragraphs) for each movie studied.
- Students will read scenes aloud for pronunciation practice and dramatic emphasis.
