The Power of the Presidency
Views of the U.S. Presidency from the Mountain of the Presidents.
Appropriate Reading level: Grade 6+ ESL High Intermediate +
Expected Outcomes:
- Students will use the Talking Circle tradition to effectively communicate their ideas on a variety of topics with their fellow students. (See p. 27 Those Who Were Here Before)
- Students will keep journals to record their (a) responses to reading selections (b) answers to practice exercises (c) list of new words + synonyms and antonyms.
- Students will read about and discuss the lives and powers of the four presidents chosen to be honored on Mount Rushmore.
- Students will write a paragraph about each president about why he/she admires that president.
- Students will read the dialogues in In the Shadow of the Mountain and Thomas J. for pronunciation practice and dramatic emphasis.
- Students will do the Perfect President project found at the end of the course.
