Conquerors and Colonists

Columbus’s log, colonists from Virginia & Massachussetts accounts of early settlers. 

Appropriate Reading level: Grade 4+ ESL Intermediate Level+
Expected Outcomes:

• Students will use the Talking Circle tradition to effectively communicate their ideas on a variety of topics with their fellow students. (See p. 27 Those Who Were Here Before)
• Students will keep journals to record their (a) responses to reading selections (b) answers to practice exercises (c) list of new words + synonyms and antonyms
• Students will read primary source accounts (Columbus’ log, transcript of Hutchinson trial, etc)
• and list the historic information they discover.
• Students will compare the fictional Hester Prynne from Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter to Anne Hutchinson who was the model for Hawthorne’s main character.
• Students will create dialogues between the historic characters from this time period and a modern talk-show host.
