From Life to Legend
The 13 original colonies expand west. Real-life legends from history, stories and songs.
Appropriate Reading level: Grade 4+ ESL Intermediate +
Expected Outcomes:
- Students will use the Talking Circle tradition to effectively communicate their ideas on a variety of topics with their fellow students. (See p. 27 Those Who Were Here Before)
- Students will keep journals to record their (a) responses to reading selections (b) answers to practice exercises (c) list of new words + synonyms and antonyms
- Students will be able to identify, then read primary source accounts and list historic information they discover.
- Students will interpret art works depicting momentous historic events of the time and describe each one literally and interpretively: Lewis&Clark meet native, Ft.McHenry battle, Washington portrait from White House, Sutter’s Mill.
- Students will learn the lyrics and be able to identify, then sing important musical selections
- from the 19th century, Star Spangled Banner, Erie Canal, Clementine.
- Students will read the legends of Paul Bunyan, John Henry and Santa Claus (A Visit from St. Nicholas) and compare one of them to a legendary hero from their native culture.
