On snow, snowstorms, snow shovels. Snowdome!

Isn’t it beautiful??? This week my adult ESL students had a variety of answers.

What I like about snow is to see it in a picture only. What I don’t like about snow is a big list: first it is dangerous for everybody; so many accidents. There is no place to park and if you are parked it is not easy to get out. And when you get out the car you got to step in snow and your feet get wet. It feels so uncomfortable because I don’t like to wear boots, I always wear shoes. Ignacio

A snow day was a peaceful day for my memories in Japan. Everybody was glad to see it snowing from inside a house and after it stopped we went outside to play with the snow. But we only had enough snow to play in one or two days a year. But now I live in New York that is the coldest city that I ever lived in. Especially this year, I’ve experienced snowstorms like blizzards many times. On this Wednesday I was on the way to my English school by car. Snow was getting harder and I couldn’t see in front of me with a lot of snowflakes. And the road was very slippery. I didn’t drive so fast, but when I braked it made a strange noise, and I felt it didn’t work very well. It was my first experience when I was driving, and I was so scared to continue driving so I returned home immediately. After returning home, lots of work like shoveling snow was waiting for me. What I like about the weather? I like to see the snow when it is falling down because you can see all white. My son loves it. But the only thing I don’t like about the snow is to drive. I feel so much nerves. Nancy M.I have heard from older people that we new generation of people become spoiled because of the snow storms that we have been experiencing. They say that wintertime used to be like these past days. When these people were young they had to walk, go to school and all their daily activities no matter what. I have never been under zero in my country. Although this is my second winter, I would like that this winter run out soon. The first time it seems good and fun, but little by little when the snow covers the road and people cannot work and business goes down, this becomes a terrible time. A few days ago, I walked into my job and couldn’t take the cold. I felt so chilly, so when I saw the weather in my watch, it was 18F, this means 13 Celsius. Oh my God. But if something doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger. Johan Vela R.

I want to say that this winter is unusual, not like the other ones that I used to experience in the last few years. The way that it’s happening makes me feel uncomfortable because I have to shovel the path track where I live and also I have to clear my car and get rid of the ice from the windows. Sometimes I feel insecure when driving because of the black ice on the pavement that I can’t see. Also the pot holes on the road are very dangerous for everybody on the road. The thing that I hate most is when I get stuck when I try to park or when I try to leave in the morning. Hermogenes S.

This winter I plowed snow many times. Every time a snowstorm comes, I go outside with a shovel. There is a steep slope in front of my garage /basement. It’s so slippery that I have to be careful not to skid my car. Snow plowing is good exercise for me. But now I worry about the next snowstorm because I don’t have any more space to put the plowed snow. My house is surrounded with many snow mounds. Yuko O.
